THE VROUKOUNDA FESTIVAL ΤΟ ΠΑΝΗΓΥΡΙ ΤΗΣ ΒΡΟΥΚΟΥΝΤΑΣ

The beginning of the path

The archeological site, home of one of the four ancient cities of Karpathos, is very well known today for the festival of Saint John, held every year on August 29th.

“The Vroukounda Festival” is an attempt to record the festival and the customs that go with it. Through twenty interviews, it sketches the role of the “celebrant”, not so much as a worshiper but as a “meraklis”- one who enjoys the celebration, who without doubt is the beating heart and soul of this and any other traditional Greek festival.

Olimbos and Olimbites, with their dedication to the preservation of their tradition, are an open window with a beautiful view to traditional Greek social entertainment of the past.
